We all know that methamphetamine (P) is a dangerous and seriously addictive drug that destroys people's lives, tears families apart, fosters gangs and organised crime, and entices young people into criminal activity.

A couple of months ago the Government launched an attack on the $1 billion plus problem. An important part of this attack is to crack down on precursors and to break supply chains.

    This approach is working already.

Customs have redeployed up to 40 staff to dedicated anti-drug work. In the past two months Customs has seized 230 kilos of pseudoephedrine, the precursor chemical used to manufacture P. This is three times the amount seized in the same period last year. Fifteen people have been arrested and $84 million worth of P has been kept off the streets.

Just maybe decent New Zealanders are starting to win the fight.
