  • Just Peachey - Newsletter
    16-November-2009

Continuing the theme of last week's "Just Peachey" here are some further examples of tough new laws to tackle crime.

    Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act
    - gives police the power to seize assets they believe were paid for by crime, and the onus is on the criminal to prove the assets were gained lawfully.

Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act - gives police more power to trace money through financial systems, and requires financial institutions to report suspicious financial activity to police.

Search and Surveillance - widens the range of offences for which police can intercept communications.

This is the legislature doing its business. Now it's over to the police, who enjoy a very high level of operational independence in New Zealand.
