  • Getting tough on criminals
    09-November-2009

One of the most common criticisms of the government that I hear is that we are not tough enough on crime. Despite this perception three very significant Bills have recently been passed into law and as they take effect I believe New Zealanders will come to see that we are tough on crime.

As a result of legislation that has been passed, some of it under urgency, the range and effectiveness of tools available to the Police have been greatly increased so they can investigate and disrupt organised criminal activity and better prosecute those involved.

    EXAMPLES OF NEW LAWS

    1. The Crimes Amendment Act
    - expands police surveillance powers to investigate criminal activity
    - doubles the maximum penalty for participation in an organised criminal group from 5 to 10 years imprisonment.

    2. The Sentencing Amendment Act
    - makes participation in an organised criminal gang an aggravating factor in sentencing.

    3. The Local Government Amendment Bill
    - enables police and territorial authorities to pull down gang structures that are intimidating.

Please be assured that this government is moving against crime and criminals. We are determined that public safety will be safeguarded.
